Spotlight on Maria Kelly, Rachel A. Wnuk, Recep Kaş, Glenn Teeter, Melissa E. Kreider, and Wilson A. Smith for their Editor’s Choice article published in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) titled “Rapid Deactivation Convolutes Electrochemical CO₂ Reduction Selectivity Measurements on Gold Rotating Ring Disk Electrodes.” The corresponding author of this work is Maria Kelly, an ECS Student member at University of Colorado Boulder, affiliated with the ECS Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry Division. Maria works in the lab of  Wilson T. Smith, Principal Investigator of UC Boulder’s Electrobuffs Team.

Dr. Kent Zheng

Dr. Kent Zheng, Assistant Professor in the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, is making significant strides in electrochemical research and editorial leadership. Since joining UT Austin in early 2024, he has been at the forefront of developing sustainable battery technologies, focusing on lithium-free systems utilizing zinc and aluminum, and exploring iron-based materials with water-based electrolytes to promote environmental sustainability.​

In addition to his research endeavors, Dr. Zheng serves as an Associate Editor for The Electrochemical Society (ECS) journal ECS Advances, where he contributes to shaping the future of electrochemical science publishing. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) proudly spotlights Dr. Andrew Hillier of Iowa State University (ISU) following his recent appointment as Technical Editor for the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) in the Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry, Electrocatalysis, and Photoelectrochemistry topical interest area. This well-earned promotion from his role as Associate Editor reflects Dr. Hillier’s deep commitment to excellence in electrochemical science and scholarly publishing.

A dedicated ECS member since 1992, Dr. Hillier has made enduring contributions to the Society over more than three decades. In addition to his editorial leadership, he is a past Chair of the ECS Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry Division, where he fostered innovation, collaboration, and professional growth within the community. A legacy of innovation and dedication in electrochemistry

Since joining The Electrochemical Society (ECS) as a member in 1984, Dr. Robert G. Kelly has exemplified what it means to be a pioneer in the field of electrochemistry. As Editor-in-Chief of ECS’s membership magazine, The Electrochemical Society Interface, since 2018, Dr. Kelly has been instrumental in shaping our community’s conversation and direction. His lifelong commitment to advancing scientific research, dynamic leadership at ECS, and extraordinary contributions to both academia and industry, truly deserve celebrating.

Prof. Kelly holds the prestigious titles of Associate Chair for Operations, AT&T Professor of Engineering, and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA) which he joined in 1990. As Co-Director of the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering, he leads innovative research projects that advance the fundamental understanding of electrochemical processes and translate into practical applications such as the development of embeddable corrosion micro-instruments and the use of microfabrication methods to study localized corrosion. His research has  contributed to significant advances in corrosion science and been pivotal in addressing real-world challenges such as corrosion in aging aircraft and infrastructure. (more…)

Professor Doron Aurbach, trailblazer in electrochemistry, materials science, and surface chemistry, has had an impressive decade-long tenure as Technical Editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) in the Battery and Energy Storage topical interest area. An active and valued member and leader of the Society, ECS Battery Division, and ECS Israel Section, he joined ECS in 1983 and is now a Life Member. His exciting career has significantly influenced energy storage and conversion technologies and he has played a pivotal role in shaping the journal’s direction in the battery space.
